A Case of Sad Romance Falling in Love with a Fraud Convict

The following is from news reports by The Guardian and Los Angeles Times on December 21 in 2020. Christie Smythe, a former reporter for Bloomberg News, began her relationship with Martin Shkreli, a hedge funder convicted for securities fraud, after she broke the news on Shkreli’s arrest in December 2015. Smythe is reported to have fallen in love with Shkreli and quit her job and divorced. When Smythe opened up her story on the magazine Elle, Shkreli, who is still in prison, stopped communicating with Smythe. When Smythe opened up her story on the magazine Elle, Shkreli, who is still in prison, stopped communicating with Smythe.

Taking this case as an example, this video intends to report how dangerous it is to consider infidelity caused by relationship addiction as romance and love. According to the news reports, the reporter fell in love with a prisoned convict, and quit her job and divorced. People may show great interest in such unusual romance story, but not much in the woman’s psychological condition.

The point to be considered is the fact that she was in infidelity. It is worrisome that cases of infidelity are usually considered as issues of only individuals, which involves problems of love, marriage, and sex. When couples have problems of marriage, love, and sex, first, they need to make efforts to directly address the problems taking necessary measures. When they cannot solve problems, they may divorce for both partner’s self-happiness. It is a serious problem that people get involved in infidelity still staying in marriage, and then, get a divorce taking infidelity as romance and love.

According to the Theory of Mimind and Xesmind, the cause of infidelity is relationship addiction, which is a severe case of psychological disorder. Women’s infidelity is the result of the disorder of memory of emotions and the expression disorder, which is the addiction to attention. In case of women’s relationship addiction, it is not important from whom they get attention. They simply get immersed into getting attention from men and feel as if they were in love. Infidelity is a type of relationship addiction and it must not be taken as love in any sense.

As in the case of the news report, many people do not know that they are in relationship addiction. Some people are convinced that they are in love, so they may divorce and change the course of their life. People in relationship addiction tend to get immersed into only their own thoughts without being sufficiently rational, logical, and common-sensical. On top of that, many cultures and societies accept infidelity as love and romance, and consider problems of marriage, love, and sex as causes of infidelity. Misconceptions about the phenomenon of infidelity leads to many serious individual and social problems. If infidelity were truly love, we would have to publicize it and encourage other people to get involved in it, including our spouse and children. The case of the reporter in the news report is a typical example of infidelity caused by relationship addiction, which is a psychological disorder.
