You need to accurately understand the concepts of self-reflection and repentance in order to be able to make the right kind of self-reflection and repentance and avoid making distorted efforts. Self-reflection is to think over and judge on your own wrong actions in the past. Many people are used to making self-reflection, but not many people repent their wrong doings in the right way by making efforts to correct themselves and resolve the issue. Self-reflection without repentance is a useless action and self-reflection should be applied only to yourself and not to your counterparty.
Repentance is to deeply realize what was wrong with your actions and to make efforts to correct your actions and resolve the issue for future progress. The concept of repentance includes the concept of self-reflection and it must include not only the right thought but also actions for correction of your actions and compensation for the damage you have caused. When you only make self-reflection without repentance, you are only thinking about the past wrongdoings without taking actions for betterment. You may reflect upon you past wrong actions but may not realize deeply and not make any effort. That is, you know that you have done wrong but you do not make any attempt to change yourself for the future or resolve the issue. In this case, identical problems are repeated or continued and you may just keep repeating self-reflection, which may not contribute to your progress in life in any positive way.
People who blame themselves and others belong to this category. They know what their problem is since they reflect on their past actions, but they do not make efforts to take the responsibility and compensate for the damage. Then, they end up blaming themselves or other people for the problem being continued and repeated. Self-blame is to repeat self-reflection and other-blame is to repeat other-reflection. People who blame themselves or others are considered to have no future since they never take responsibility and never make efforts for the future.
On the other hand, if problems are continued or repeated even when you keep making efforts to correct your actions and resolve the issue, it indicates that the process of repentance is not being proceeded in the right way or the right direction. Your self-reflection may have been out of focus or your efforts may have been distorted, with which it is likely that you may have justified your past actions or distorted efforts. When you make efforts in the process of repentance but the problem still continues, you become to think that you have done your best. It is true that you have done your best, but it indicates that you did not accurately understand the underlying mechanism and the root cause of the problem. Then, you naturally become to justify yourself thinking that there is nothing more you can do. Or, you may justify your problem blaming other people or the whole society. In both cases, the problem stays unsolved and your self-reflection becomes fruitless.
People who only reflect upon their past wrongdoings without taking responsibility live their life blaming themselves and other people, and people who repent and make efforts in distorted ways become to develop firm self-justification and self-conviction. Distorted self-reflection and repentance can lead you to fall into a great danger in life, but most people live without keeping this in mind. Self-reflection and repentance cannot but be based on one's own subjective thought standards, so we need to develop wisdom to adequately judge our actions and situations with accurate understanding of the operational mechanism of human mind and psychology.
