The Stress of Works & Psychology

 


           Stress is unavoidable when working, but types of stress are different depending on the reasons for working. We covered 4 types of choosing works: working without thoughts or values, working without any other choice despite the stress, working as the means for certain goals, and immersing in works due to love towards the jobs.

           Some of you might ask, 'how can you categorize this into only four types? They could be mixed.' Well, you may feel that 2~3 mingled together, but the mind does not operate being mingled. For example, let's think about a case of you thinking that 'I work without thoughts because it is the means for my purpose.' This thought is separated into two different thoughts from the mind's point of view: 'working without thoughts' and 'working as the means for the purpose.' The mind operates in one way of the two, not simultaneously.

           First, stress is not generated when working without thoughts since the conscious does not operate. People in this category just do what they are told to do only. They walk on eggshells while they are at the workplace and get off work when it's time. If they have to stay and work overtime, they will be fine with that if they get the overtime payment. Simply saying, they just follow and do as others do. There is no need for thinking. They don't get stress generated from their work. It may seem that it is dangerous to have people of this type as staff, but they are very suitable for your right arms. There are strengths and weaknesses. In case of having a person of this type as your right arm, you are more likely to have problems if that person thinks about his or her work. But you can't judge that person is either wrong or bad. When looking at business problems generated by a person you trust, most of them are due to that he or she thinks about the given jobs.

           Second, those who work without any other option, they get stress more from personal problems than from their work. People in this category get stress from themselves that they have no other options than working even though they don't want to work. Regardless of the amount of work, they just hate the situation they are involved in. In general, they have complaints about the commute, working environment, the importance of their work, coworkers, etc.; they say they don't like their work because of these reasons, but in fact, they are just finding the stress about themselves from other causes. They get the stress from themselves that they must work for economic values even though they don't want to work. They cannot express that they hate their work, resulting in stress being operated within them and making themselves suffer more difficulties. Therefore, they end up blaming their surroundings due to the stress about themselves, not the stress about the work.

           Third, those doing their jobs as the means for their purpose think of the next goal in the future when they do well on their present works because they think their work is not the goal and the dream but is just like a stepping-stone towards their goal. So, people in this category have a lot of stress about their work. They complain a lot about their works and jobs because of not the stress about themselves but the work stress. It doesn't mean that they hate their work. They just get stress from their work. Especially, people whose work is related to cooperation are in this category. Those who are willing to work well as the means for their purposes are also in this category. They've got to do their jobs nicely, but they are stressed out when they are given works to do because what they do is not for their goals but the means for their purposes.  

           Let's talk about the stress of a person who was once a civil servant for an example. It is very usual that they are given extra work to do from their boss 10~20 minutes before they get off work. He was given extra work and told to finish them before the meeting that was scheduled for the next morning. 'Basically, what my boss is saying is don't go home and get to work all night up. That drives me crazy! This happened frequently, so I just quit the job! I couldn't deal with the stress anymore. I actually loved my job and enjoyed my work, but I was always ordered to do extra work right before the time that I get off work even though they could be done during the work hours. That was dreadful.'

           Fourth, those who immerse in the charm of their work and enjoy working itself do not get stress, but have strong passion generated. They think it is worth enough to stay all night up for work. They really enjoy their work. The passion generated at this point is the power to immerse in the fun and interest; as it gets strengthened, achievement also gets strengthened resulting in no stress. However, excessive immersion is the problem. This excessive immersion can be usually seen in males' psychology. This excessive immersion does not allow them to feel the tiredness. The excessive passion generated by excessive immersion makes us not know the physical tiredness. Due to this, a sudden severe illness, heart attack, and sudden death may occur.

           Those who work even though they hate working evade stress pretty well in their own ways when stress comes in because they cannot endure it. It is the same for those who work as the means for their purposes. People in these two categories get to work as they get big stress but cannot immerse themselves in their work passionately.

           In cases of working passionately due to the charm of work, it may look good, but it is very dangerous. People in this category do not have a fixed time to go and off work. They immerse themselves in their work without considering fulfilling requirements for survival such as eating, sleeping, resting, etc. because they are so passionate about working itself. They think the time for sleeping, eating, commuting, resting, etc. is waste. They think working itself fulfills the economic values, values of human relationships, and values of social activities and feels the happiness of self-actualization. It applies the same for other things as well.  If excessive immersion is generated like this, a sudden physical problem might occur due to chronic fatigue. One of the reasons for sudden death is excessive immersion in the charm of work. It is because health is not the number one priority to be taken care of in this case.

           Work is always followed by stress. For those having knowledge related work gets stress due to operations of the conscious; for those having work that is related to physical activities have physical tiredness accumulated because their jobs are the operations of the unconscious expressions. Thus, works are directly related to stress.

           Stress is not related to the amount of work; the work itself is stress. This is related to the work operating as one's own value; if the work is not connected to economic values, values of human relationships, and values of social activities, strong stress is generated making us feel as if we are the slaves of the work and economic values. However, thinking reversely, work can be enjoyable and comfortable if it is for making one's own value. By doing so, we can feel the charm of the work and perceive it as fun and interesting unknowingly. Just make sure not to immerse yourself in work excessively. To do so, your work life and home life must be managed harmoniously.

           How not to immerse yourself in the charm of work excessively is to know the values of work. Economic value is not the only value. When other values are pursued, economic value is followed. Whatever your work is, you can be happy if you assign a value to the work. Especially, if you assign one of either value of human relationships or values of social activities to your work, passion will be generated; you can prevent yourself from being excessively immersed in the work. I experimented on adjusting the ratio based on the debate for the value of task distribution in men and women when I lectured laborers from the factory.

           When I gave a lecture to laborers, I had an experiment of adjusting the ratio of males and females along with the discussion about these values. The productivity was improved and the fraction defective was decreased. Connecting the values of human relationships and the values of social activities to labor improved the immersion of individual psychology. Like this, work and stress are closely connected with each other. This stress could make you suffer in difficulties both physically and psychologically, but it could offer you values of human relationships and social values.

           Work and psychology are deeply related to each other. Intellectual laborers have stress generated as they concentrate on their thoughts and memories by the operations of the conscious; physical laborers get physical tiredness accumulated as they focus on their expressions (speeches, actions, and facial expressions) unknowingly by the operations of the unconscious. So, the relationship between work and psychology must be understood accurately to live happily as you heal the stress. Let's cover differences in psychology based on these four categories mentioned above.

           First, those who work without thoughts may feel everything comfortable and keep a work efficiency, but there is no happiness. The work efficiency neither increases nor decreases because they only do what they are told to do. They just work comfortably, which does not allow them to make improvements or have creativity. When looking at this, you can see who is going to be the right person for a certain kind of work and will be able to assign the work to that person. If the work does not require either creativeness or development possibility but is the work that keeps work efficiency, 'the person working without thoughts' is going to be the right person for the work. If another person who thinks about the given work takes in charge of the work, problems are more likely to happen.

           Second, those who work even though they don't like to work are neither comfortable nor happy. In most cases, people in this category work in the short term or part-time. They cannot endure the stress they get from their work. Work efficiency and productivity decrease; there is no creativeness and development possibility; problems occur within their psychology. Due to this, they don't have meanings and values of life because their work is not related to economic values, values of human relationships, and values of social activities.

           Third, those working as the means for purposes have compulsions and anxieties because of two reasons. One is that they must work and accomplish step by step; the second is that they also move towards achievement and goals. They have compulsions and anxieties such as 'I must do this well,' 'I've got to finish this quickly,' 'I must have decent outcomes,' etc. because they must accomplish the purposes they've wanted by having their present work done nicely. Because of this, strong stress is generated; it develops into psychological disorders in many cases. Having a psychological disorder cannot be a matter of good or bad because the psychological problem can be either good or bad. The cause of psychological problems at this point is the phenomenon aroused by compulsions and anxieties. The creativeness and efficiency of work drop by these compulsions and anxieties. People in this category think that it is fine to work as much as they need and that they don't have to do their work nicely because their work is not for the purpose, they wanted but the means for the purpose. They can continue on their work because they can still dream of possibilities toward their purposes and goals despite the decrease in creativeness and efficiency.

Fourth, those immersing themselves in the charm of work can be happy because they pursue happiness as their passion and achievement get strengthened. This is the happiness within one's mind making him or her can feel. According to this, the passion becomes strengthened. When seeing these problems through, it is very good and but generates problems in every human relationship including family because they have limited human relationships by meeting others related only to the work. Therefore, the characteristic of a person with limited human relationships this way works passionately and enjoy the fun of working. 

           You must understand that psychology about work is constantly operating if you want to prevent psychological problems, treat psychological disorders, and live happily with meanings and values of life.

           By understanding how the mind and psychology operate, you can choose and assign the right person for the right place. This can be applied to production workers as well. For example, if a person’s job is related to production or assembly line, it applies differently depending on the types of duties and tasks, such as direct labor, management or supervision, examination, or quality control. Rather than a person's ability, his or her mind and psychology are more important. A person's ability can be displayed at his or her best as he or she increases the work efficiency by understanding how the mind and psychology operate.


Healing Stress Generated from Work

 

How can we stabilize psychology and live actualizing self-value happily as we work? We have categorized laborers into white-collar workers and blue-collar workers. Also, even in the cases of emotional labor which consists of both white-collar labor and blue-collar labor, you may choose the healing methods to stabilize mind depending on whether your work is more related to white-collar labor or to blue-collar labor. 

First of all, it is effectively good for white-collar workers to have hobbies related to physical activities or work out for healing the stress from their work. It is because their job highly requires intellectual work. I am pretty sure that many of you, white-collar workers, have already experienced that the stress is healed when doing physically active hobbies or working out. However, in cases when you cannot do active hobbies or work out, it is better for you to do other intellectual activities that are not related to your job at all. If you are a student, you can heal the stress and wounds from studying when you study other things that are not related to schoolwork. If you are a lecturer or a teacher teaching mathematics, you can lecture or teach other things not related to mathematics if you get stress and wounds from the subject itself or enjoy other things that are not related to lecturing if you get stress and wounds from lecturing. Tiredness of physical body or knowledge should be considered when choosing another exercises, hobbies, or work for healing stress on white-collar jobs as such.

           Like this, for white-collar workers, they must consider fatigue from knowledge or body when choosing a hobby, exercise, or another work to heal the stress that comes from their work. Ultimately, in cases of doing intellectual work, it is better to have hobbies related to unconscious expressions and work out; it is also good to have intellectual activities that are not related to your job at all.

         As for blue-collar workers, physical fatigue will decrease amazingly if you do intellectual activities that are static. You might doubt this. Physical fatigue decreases because the body is affected by the energy of the mind that is generated along with psychological operations.

           I explained earlier about health, psychology, and intellectual desire when doing self-actualization. When doing physical labor, health and psychology become relatively stable as making unconscious expressions using the body. Then, an intellectual desire gets strengthened, and you can feel the happiness of self-actualization when doing intellectual activities. Therefore, it is good for those doing physical work to have hobbies or exercises that are related to intellectual activities. Many people love playing soccer. They might feel as if their fatigue is being relieved, but it is, in fact, that they are not sensing physical fatigue being accumulated. After knowing clearly if your job is more physical activity-related or intellectual activity-related, you must choose the adequate hobbies and exercises. In other words, it would be much easier to make a choice if you know whether your hobbies are whether physical activity-related or intellectual activity-related.

However, in cases when you cannot do intellectual activities, you have another way. It is either to have exercises or hobbies that make you utilize your physical body parts that are not related to your job. For example, if your job is related to skillful work by hands at a factory, singing hard at a karaoke could heal the stress from the work since physical activities being done at the factory and at the karaoke are different which allows the fatigue to get reduced. If you are an emotional laborer, check which of the physical activities you do the most on a daily basis, among speeches, actions, and facial expressions. Excluding the physical activity that you do at work; you can heal the stress and reduce the physical tiredness if you do other physical activities. 

Summarizing once again, white-collar workers can heal their stress by either doing hobbies or work out that require physical activities or doing other intellectual activities that are not related to their work; blue-collar workers can heal the stress and reduce physical tiredness by either doing hobbies or work out that require intellectual activities or doing other expressing activities that are not related to their work.


What Is Addiction?

 


           Scholars do research studies about why human beings work. From the psychological point of view, I am trying to find a way to heal the stress and wounds generated in psychology due to work, rather than analyzing the reasons for working. Work has an important value for PIRs (person in relationships) when doing self-actualization. You have covered the four categories previously: the case of working without thoughts, the case of working even though you don't want, the case of working as the means for purpose and goal, and the case of working because of immersing yourself with fun in work. I put 'work addiction' aside because I consider it as the case of working with a psychological disorder.

           Work addiction is a psychological disorder just like other general kinds of addiction. Thus, operations of mind and psychology of people who are addicted to alcohol, gambling, drug, exercise, the Internet, games, etc. need to be considered when analyzing the mind and psychology of workaholic. In other words, the mind operation of a workaholic is the same as that of other kinds of addiction. So, it is important to understand first what addiction is.  

           In cases of immersing oneself in work and having an excessive amount of work might be considered as workaholism, but it is different from work addiction occurred by operations of stress and wounds. Immersing oneself excessively in work is the same, but addiction is a psychological disorder caused by compulsions and anxieties due to stress and wounds. So, a person cannot be judged as a workaholic just because he or she enjoys work and works a lot.  

           The core of the work addiction is compulsions being operated by stress and wounds about the work. When stress and wounds are generated, compulsions operate to bail out of the stress and wounds; work must be done to get away from the stress and wounds. One might and might not recognize that something is wrong with him or her, but it is impossible to control oneself by his or her own will even if he/she knows that.

           People tend to misunderstand work addiction as working excessively all night up, but working a lot isn't actually work addiction. It is just excessive working or immersing oneself excessively in work because he or she like the work. It can't be work addiction. If it is work addiction, the object of compulsion and that of relieving the compulsion is the same, which is work. Like this, having compulsions on a specific object is called addiction.

           Thus, work addiction has the compulsion about work; exercise addiction has the compulsion about exercise; alcohol addiction has the compulsion about alcohol. In the case of having an exercise addiction, a person suffers in the agony of stress and wounds that are not endurable if he or she cannot do exercise. Being unable to do any other things, this person suffers from compulsion and feels anxiousness. This person must do exercise in order to get away from the compulsion and have his or her psychology stabilized. If the anxiousness lasts without getting away from the compulsion, phenomena like suffocating, and illness anxiety disorder occur, making oneself not being able to endure them; he or she ends up with exercising by fair means or foul to get away from the compulsion. Like this, addiction is having the object of compulsion and the object of overcoming the compulsion the same.

           The symptom of addiction doesn't always occur on a daily basis. The time and number of occurrences of the symptom are not the important matter. Regardless of the cycle, once compulsion about a certain object is formed, the object must be carried out in order to be free from the compulsion.

           This kind of addiction isn't really recognized well because it appears as either male's passion or female's love. Just for reference, passion and love do not generate stress but heal the stress and wounds. On the contrary, addiction forms compulsions about a certain object, making a person feel difficult and have wounds and stress operated. At this moment, the person with an addiction cannot do anything else but looks for the object he or she is addicted to in order to get away from the compulsion. This kind of addiction occurs commonly in our daily life.

           For example, a person addicted to exercise cannot do anything ever since the moment he or she perceives any information related to exercise at his or her workplace even if he or she is supposed to work. The stress that is strong enough to stop everything related to a daily life is generated. Also, a person addicted to work has compulsions with thoughts like 'I should get to sleep early, so I can get back to work early tomorrow' when he or she sees broadcasting related to work. It is because of various problems or ideas related to work that come to his or her mind so suddenly. This person cannot control himself or herself.

           The social phenomenon of 'hurry up' in Korea shows that we are suffering from compulsions that much. This social phenomenon is caused by sudden changes in Korea. People are suffering from compulsions that they must to do something, work, go to college and have jobs. If not, they think they cannot survive in this society without economic values. This is not a matter of right or wrong but just interpreted from a psychological point of view.

           They see Korea as 'passionate and dynamic hell' and other countries with good social welfare as 'gloomy heaven with neither passion nor fun.' As such sentences can indicate a person with or without having compulsions. Fun and passion are more dynamically intense as compulsion and addiction become stronger. However, it means that there is no fun and passion without compulsions. In cases of compulsive hoarding, it is the same as treasuring a pile of trash. It is a psychological disorder of compiling trash and withstanding to discard trash because a person has a compulsive thought that it might be useful sometime. Hence, trash is the object of addiction in compulsive hoarding. For instance, hygiene is the object of addiction in germaphobes. Getting addicted to human relationships between males and females is called relationship compulsion, relationship addiction in other words. These kinds of compulsions are spread widely throughout the entire society; these are very typical phenomena that are appeared in addiction.

           When a compulsion is formed to a certain object and when the compulsion is relieved through the same object, it is called an addiction. Because of this, addiction makes you suffer in difficulties of the mind if compulsion is not removed because it is followed by very strong stress and wounds; when the compulsion is relieved, you feel very comfortable and happy. So, you end up deeply immersing yourself in the process of releasing the compulsion. Some of you recognize it as if you immerse yourself in passion or love, but make sure clearly understand that it is only releasing the compulsion.

           If a woman has obsessive-compulsive feelings about a relationship with a man, compulsions are formed when the man comes to her mind or any information related  to the man is perceived; she becomes able to do nothing until she feels comfortable and happy after relieving the compulsions through having phone calls, text messaging, etc. with him. This is called either a distorted attachment relationship or obsession. It is a type of compulsion and relationship addiction. So, if this kind of compulsion is formed, it is not controlled due to the operations of strong stress.

         A person with a compulsion due to work addiction gets anxieties without being able to do anything for daily life if he or she cannot do his or her works along with strong stress. This person can relieve the compulsion and become comfortable, fun, and happy only by doing works. This work addiction might be perceived as if it allows a person to be able to do self-actualization by pursuing values of economics, human relationships, and social activities, but is it not true. The work is the object of compulsion and of releasing the compulsion; work addiction is a psychological disorder.

          Work addiction generates stress and wounds due to the compulsion of the mind as other various addictions do; this compulsion can only be relieved by doing work. When releasing the compulsion, the work addict damages him, herself, or others by causing stress and wounds. Addiction might seem as if immersing oneself to a specific object just like male's passion and female's love; however, passion and love heal oneself or the other whereas addiction damages oneself or the other.

 Accordingly, it will be easier to understand and to categorize if the addiction harms oneself or oneself with others. When looking at people with addiction, someone only damages his or her body and mind, and someone damages not only himself or herself but also others.

           Let's look into alcohol addiction as an example of the kinds of addictions that damage both self and others. It could be perceived as a type of addictions that only damage oneself. However, in many cases, an alcohol addict not only damages his or her body and mind, but also causes serious problems to his or her spouse, children, and other people in the human relationships. This alcoholic person has formed compulsions about alcohol, causing powerful stress and wounds, and faces anxieties and nervousness, having psychological difficulties and agony. This person must drink alcohol somehow because he or she cannot relieve the compulsion unless drinking alcohol; in this process, surrounding people suffer from difficulties caused by this person. By drinking alcohol, the compulsion is relieved, allowing this person to have comfort and happiness.

           When talking about addiction, we use the word 'habitual' a lot. However, habitual alcohol drinking and alcohol addiction are different. Habitual alcohol drinking is habitually drinking almost every day, but it is not followed by either anxieties or powerful stress due to compulsion about drinking alcohol. If a person can hold himself from drinking alcohol for tomorrow's schedule, he is not addicted to alcohol. The reason we use the terms 'habitual alcohol drinking' is that it is highly potential to become alcohol addiction when compulsion is formed.

           In the case of gambling addiction, a person tries to make some money by gambling at first. If this person makes profits through gambling, he or she's high potential to become a gambler because it feels great when there is a sudden, unexpected monetary profit, and it brings the effect of an increase in economic value. If a person gambles to feel the mood of an increase in this economic value, this person becomes addicted to gambling. Gambling addiction occurs when a person tries to feel the mood of an increase in economic value by earning money in a short period of time rather than having the purpose of making profits. Due to this, a person addicted to gambling wants to feel the mood of the great increase in economic value if he or she makes a small profit. Thus, when information related to economic values is perceived, compulsions about gambling are formed, increasing the anxieties and nervousness, and powerful stress and wounds are generated. In order to relieve the compulsions, this person must gamble; because of this action, not only economic destruction but also negative impacts on other people economically occur, generating serious problems for both.

           Like this, there are many kinds of addictions that damage not only oneself, but also others, such as alcohol addiction, gambling addiction, drug addiction, sex addiction, relationship addiction, etc.

           Next is about kinds of addictions that only damage oneself. The representative example is work addiction. If a person is addicted to work, his or her spouse and family members welcome this work addiction because of the increase in economic values. They think the work addict works hard and tries his or her best for them. This person addicted to work has, in fact, a psychological disorder due to compulsion and relieve about work but does not either harm or damage others. Economic values can increase, but the values of human relationships might be destroyed, and social activities disappear. Even though problems might occur in the values of human relationships or social activities, the person addicted to work does not damage others if economic values are formed by work addiction. Family members might turn away from this person if he or she cannot make economic values.

          Also, even in the case of exercise addiction, most people just work out hard, a little bit excessively in some cases. So, others do not perceive that they are being damaged by the exercise addicts. Like this, exercise addiction does not give any negative perception to the other or others even if physical and psychological problems have occurred to this exercise addict. People in close relationships with this person only feel a little bit uncomfortable with this issue, which makes the exercise addict does not perceive that he or she is addicted to exercise. In many cases, we perceive a work addict as a person working very hard and an exercise addict as a person. In other words, they are doing things for themselves.

           These people have serious psychological disorders because they get powerful stress if they cannot relieve the compulsions that they have formed to the things they are addicted to. They do not recognize that their minds are being damaged. It is the same for people addicted to games, the Internet, smartphones, etc. They are just harming themselves.  

           Like work addiction and exercise addiction, the kind of addiction that is perceived as something beneficial to oneself tends to be acknowledged as living a valuable life even though it actually damages the self. Strangely, the psychological problem, work addiction especially, is acknowledged as living a valuable life.

           The reason why work addiction being acknowledged as living a valuable life is that it creates the values of life. Work allows us to make and have the values of social activity, human relationships, and economics. We can be acknowledged by others for living a valuable life and feel as if we have been successful in self-actualization. Thus, people around us are generous about work addiction. In the case of exercise addiction, same as work addiction, people think it isn't a problem because exercising is good for health. The addicts do not know that they actually have psychological disorders and that they have psychological problems of losing values of human relationships such as family, friends, acquaintances, etc. by limiting the value of human relationships into the value of human relationships related to only work.

           On the other hand, addictions like game addiction, internet addiction, smartphone addiction are different. It is because there are no values for life. People perceive these kinds of addictions are serious problems because they think there are no values of social activities, human relationships, and economics. Well, of course, a game addict can become a pro-gamer, and an internet addict can become an expert on the internet. A smartphone addict can become an expert on smartphones as well. It would be great if they can actually become professionals on the subject they are addicted to; however, chances are very remote, which is the reason why we perceive this kind of addictions as bad. They also think these additions cause losing the values of life. So, they want to stop these addictions, try to treat them, and keep talking about how serious these problems are. Simply saying, they understand that these addictions are just a waste of time and cause the seriousness as psychological disorders. This kind of addictions does not damage others.

           Therefore, we must judge whether to get treatment or not when categorizing addictions by analyzing whether the addictions damage only the self or damage the self and others as well. In the case of work addiction that only damages the self, the addict must know how to treat the self and prevent the self from the addiction accurately since it builds values of life. However, work addiction is very rarely being studied because people judge it is valuable for life. But when looking at this problem from an individual's psychological view, it is highly potential to cause a bigger problem. It is because the work addiction could become another addiction since mind operations of addictions are the same. For example, a work addict becomes a gambling addict if the person knows the fun of gambling, an alcohol addict if he or she feels the fun of drinking alcohol, and a sex addict if the person feels the fun of having sex. This person could also become a relationship addict if he or she feels the fun of having human relationships. Since addiction is having the same object of compulsion and of relieving compulsion, addiction can be changed into another kind if the object is changed. This is why addiction is very dangerous.

           Due to this, if a person feels values of life (social values, economic values, and values of human relationships) from being addicted to work, this person could be easily addicted to gambling, drugs, sex, human relationship, etc. later on. Well, of course, the person might be confident that he or she can get away from the pleasure after enjoying the fun for a while; however, this person is in the state that the operations of compulsion and of relieving the compulsion cannot be controlled if he or she is already addicted to something. Therefore, it is a matter of time that addiction that damages only oneself changing to addiction that damages not only the self but also others; it is very difficult to be recovered back to the original state.

           Work addiction is a syndrome that one works hard and cannot live without doing work, which means that it is a sort of disease. However, the word 'compulsion' must be included in its name because the passion for work also makes also make one work hard. Passion is generated by enjoying working, liking somebody, having fun doing something, etc. Work addiction is not the passion for work but the compulsive desire for working that can only be relieved by working. It is a psychological disorder.

           People say that work addiction is not a bad thing. Rather, they like it. Some say that they would like to be addicted to work. For some of you, your spouse or family could say to you, 'get addicted to your work please.' It is because work addiction is followed by wealth and honor by obtaining economic and social values. This work addiction could be valuable to your spouse, children, and other family members even though it is a psychological disorder. 

           The biggest problem of work addiction is that work is the cause of compulsion and the object of relieving the compulsion. That is to say that stress is generated due to work and can only be relieved by doing work. It is not relieved by anything else. Work is the powerful stress and the only way to heal the stress. A work addict relieves stress by doing work whenever stress is generated, regardless of its kind. If strong stress is generated by fighting against someone, this person relieves his or her stress by doing work. Whether it is compulsion or stress, the work addict relieves it by work. Compulsion is formed immediately when a small piece of information about work is perceived. The strong and compulsive desire for doing work is formed by ideas, creativity, other things that remind working to the work addict. This person suffers from the compulsion that causes him or her feeling as if he or she would fall behind or as if ideas would disappear. The work addict can be free from the compulsion and feel comfortable and happy only if this person gets to work. Therefore, work addiction is the same as living in compulsions, strong stress, and wounds. 

           We can see that work addiction is a problem, which has occurred in the mind. When looking at the system of the mind, psychology is composed of migenes that generates mind energy, habits being operated by migenes, and perception being operated, felt, and recognized by habits.

           People do not believe that there is the energy of the mind. The existence of the energy of the mind can be recognized even though it cannot be proved. Think about a person who fell into the water. The person will float on the water if he or she relaxes but will sink in water if he or she doesn't. You should think about why the person can either float on or sink in the water even though there is no change in his or her body weight. Also, a drunk person can be considered as he or she is not conscious. A person, who is tanked up, is very heavy, heavier than when the person is awake. Moreover, a dead body, the state of where both the conscious and the unconscious are stopped, is much heavier than the drunk person. All of these are phenomena you can directly and indirectly experience. The reason for feeling changes in the bodyweight by operations of the conscious and the unconscious although there is no change is due to the operation of mind energy.

           Habit, the unconscious, is operated by migenes which create the mind energy; this energy can be used for either good or bad depending on how the psychology of habit and of the conscious are operated. Because of this, work addiction causes the repetitive phenomena of having stress and wounds aroused by compulsion and of relieving the compulsion; the mind energy affects the psychology of habit and the conscious abnormally. This is why the mind energy is supplied as bad energy. The problem is that the psychology of habit and psychology of the conscious also have impacts on the body. If the psychology of habit and psychology of the conscious operate as bad energy, the body is also supplied with bad energy.

           Therefore, a work addict could suddenly have a serious physical illness or a heart attack (sudden death) with a high possibility. Of course, it has not been yet proven medically, but if a person has a serious physical illness or heart attack (sudden death), you must think about work addiction as its cause. I just assume that it is because the mind energy is used as bad energy and has negative impacts on the body.

           Moreover, prevention and treatment are important since stress and wounds are caused by compulsion because work addiction generates not only psychological or physical problems, but it could also cause another psychological disorder or serious addiction. Other types of addiction may occur psychologically. Also, it may occur physically, such as neurologically-based disorders, somatization disorders, or physical diseases. It is not irrelevant to say that people with psychological disorders suffer with high stress and wounds including headache, migraine, gastroenteric trouble, irritable bowel syndrome etc. in most cases. 

           Like this, in the mind, bad energy of wounds and stress has an impact on the psychology of habit and of the conscious. Despite the values of life generated from being addicted to work, it must be understood that the body and the mind could be negatively affected by psychological disorders. 

           Work addiction and having lots of work are different. Tiredness due to excessive work is physical fatigue. This type of tiredness is recovered if the person gets rest comfortably; at this point, rest is the healing. However, people accumulate tiredness when they have more work. It will result in them to suffer chronic fatigue syndrome because they form compulsions on work addiction, which can be relieved by working. This could be a very serious circumstance and is the reason why work addiction is dangerous.

           Another problem is that the object of compulsion can be changed from work to another one. A person is a work addict if the object of his or her compulsion is work, a gambler if it is a gamble, and a drug addict if it is drugs. So, work addition must not be neglected by perceiving it as valuable. It is important to keep the level of addiction and prevent it from being changed to another kind of addiction. If addiction that damages others has occurred as well, this addiction must be treated and prevented it from being changed to another kind. If it is not recognized, people, especially those of you who have gained social status, honor, and economic wealth, might lose everything at once as the object of their compulsion changes although they have made values of a successful life. 

           Thus, if you think you are a work addict, you'd better prevent or treat the addiction for the reason mentioned above and the additional reason that you could damage not only yourself, but also others. You should know that many people lose the values they have gained after they become successful in their business or work because their work addiction has changed to another kind. As already it mentioned several times, addiction can be changed to another kind; it causes problems not only to oneself, but also to others. Making values of life is important, but you must understand that keeping the values is more important. Living hard is good, but make sure to know and understand that work addiction is a dangerous psychological disorder.


Psychological Disorder of Work

 


           There are many methods to analyze the psychological disorders of workers. Psychological disorders can be analyzed without difficulties by analyzing facial expressions, speech, actions, or gestures through questions after categorizing these people whether they are white-collar workers, blue-collar workers, or emotional laborers. At this point, the psychological disorder must be categorized into either disorder of the conscious or disorder of emotions.

           The characteristic of psychological disorders is that people with this type of disorder highly concentrate on their work. They focus on, get immersed in, and remember their work well. Productivity and efficiency are good; their creativeness and development possibility are high as well. Whatever their work is assigned, they can do it well. In other words, they are crazy about their work. They are deeply engaged in their work, which is good for a company and its organization since the company and its organization are more likely to be successful with just a few numbers of employees who are addicted to work. This psychological disorder increases concentration, immersion, memory, creativeness, etc.; all of these consume one's mind energy. Stress and wounds are generated due to this, making the self or others feel difficult. A person with a disorder of the conscious if fine but makes others difficult; a person with a disorder of emotions does not make others feel difficult or makes himself or herself difficult. Like this, a psychological disorder is advantageous for work, but it causes problems in human relationships. Therefore, work and psychological disorders are in an inseparable relation.

           First, when looking into the human's mind, the mind is composed of the conscious and the unconscious; as for psychology, it is composed of migenes that generate energy, habits operated by the energy, and the conscious, operated by the habits. The mind is like the energy-making factory.

           When looking into the conscious, the conscious means recognizing and feeling through perceptions, thoughts, memories, intended expressions, etc. That is to say that it is to think and feel. The psychological disorder of the conscious means that problems have occurred in the process of recognizing and thinking through the conscious.

           As for the habits, they are the things that are not recognized and not felt through perceptions, thoughts, memories, expressions, etc. but operate. In other words, habits are the operation that allows one to think and feel. The psychological disorder of the habits means that problems occur when habits operate. Expressions are the representative of habits. A person who habitually hits others when he or she is in a good mood is more likely to become physically violent when either this person gets angry or strong stress comes in. Whatever habits they have, people express stress through their habits. The patterns of expressions are related to speech, actions, and facial expressions and are applied unknowingly.

The disorder of the conscious causes problems in opinions of right and wrong since problems have occurred in recognizing and feeling. If you say 'wrong' to a certain opinion when others say 'right,' it means that you have the disorder of the conscious. Whether the opinion is right or wrong, it is not an important matter; what matters is that you think differently from others. Having the disorder of the conscious does not always mean that it is problematic; it is just that problems have occurred when your mind operates in human relationships during social activities.

         The most representative example of the disorder of the conscious is personality disorders. A person with personality disorder thinks, acts, perceives, and remembers things differently from others. Because of this reason, the person perceives that others have problems instead of recognizing himself or herself is the one having problems in human relationships or social activities. So, whether it is right or wrong, the person with a personality disorder is certain with what he or she feels through thoughts upon opinions.

           A disorder of the conscious usually occurs in males, especially those with strong self-assertion. They assure their assertions are right. If they think they've got damaged from problems with others and if they are not recovered from the damage, it is more likely to continue. For example, let's assume that you need to borrow some money for your business from your friend. If your friend rejects your request with saying that 'the business won't be successful,' you get more stress from what your friend said rather than from that you couldn't borrow the money. It is because what your friend said is different from your assertion. If you keep persuading your friend, finally borrow the money, and make your business successful, you will release the stress you had before by returning stress. You will say to your friend, 'you said it would fail, but I actually did make my business successful because I was certain about my success.' People with disorder of the conscious like this hold grudges. It won't normally appear but comes out someday when their thoughts are verified clearly. When economic values, social values, and the values of human relationships are proven in competitive advantage, it becomes more pronounced. By proving that their thoughts were correct, they release the stress they had before; this usually happens in males.

           Unlike males, what happens commonly in females is a disorder of emotions. This is having problems in the unconscious, which is a habit. In other words, problems occur in the flows and patterns of emotions. Due to this, rather than right or wrong, whether their emotions are good or bad is what matters. If you say you like something when others don't like it or if you say you don't like something when others like it, you have a disorder of emotions.

           This can be seen in the workplace. Males are more likely to be certain with their assertions because of the disorder of the conscious. Females are more likely to be certain with their emotions because they usually have the disorder of emotions. 

           This psychological disorder may be perceived as if it separates males and females if it is categorized into males and females, but it is separated just because the mind operations of males and females are different. Because of this, if problems occur when a male and a female work together, the female analyzes the work based on whether she likes or not whereas the male analyzes it based on whether it is right or wrong. The way to reconcile after having conflicts for work is also different for males and for females. The male still thinks that changing and correcting something that is not right must be done even though he says, 'I am sorry about this, I thought wrong, I will change this.' However, female's emotions are still not good even though the male said 'I'm sorry,' if her emotions have become negative after the conflict. Even if she works together with the male, her emotion of dislike still continues. Then she says, 'I know he is right, but still, I don't like working with him.' This is the phenomenon happening due to the difference in male's and female's minds, and it can be found not only in work but also in a daily life.

           Because of this, it is natural to follow the female's opinion if there is a conflict between a male and a female in the work process. It is not a matter of right and wrong but a matter of emotions. Males’ opinions are future-oriented when working whereas females' opinions are more realistic; realistically, there are no other options than following the females' opinions.

           Male's thoughts, the conscious, are future-oriented, abstract, make plans, and talk about possibilities. Even though it is difficult and disliking, they move towards possibility if they have hope. Thus, visions and hope are important for males. Even when working, visions and hopes for values of life that they get by working are very important since they are the energy of life, the basis of passion, and values of the future.

           However, females are different. Since habits are being operated, the unconscious is realistic, specific, what they must feel in a person. Rather than possibilities, the present results are important. Even if it is possible and hopeful in the future, their future is the same as if it doesn't exist if they don't like things and they feel difficult in the present. Therefore, everything depends on whether their present feelings are positive or negative (like or dislike).

           If problems have occurred in the conscious (thoughts), it is a disorder of the conscious; it is the disorder of emotions if problems have occurred in emotions (habits). These psychological disorders are not supposed to be judged by 'whether they are good or bad' and 'whether they are problematic or not.' Psychological disorder means having problems in the mind and psychology in the process of self-actualization, which is the values of human relationships and social activities. These kinds of disorders don't necessarily need to be treated if they provide happiness of self-actualization to oneself and others. Instead, they can be prevented from developing into another psychological disorder. However, they need to be treated if they make oneself or others feel difficult instead of providing happiness of self-actualization. Thus, a person doesn't necessarily have problems just because he or she has a psychological disorder; not all the psychological disorders need to be treated.
